The small harbour town of Salcombe on the south Devon Coast was the jump-off site for a flotilla of US Navy warships that led the first assault on Utah Beach on D-Day 1944. This book relieves those momentous days through the eyes of Salcombe’s residence and the young, and mostly inexperienced, American sailors who bravely took their ships into harm’s way.
Some of them returned, but many others perished when their ships were destroyed by the enemy. The authors have drawn heavily on a rich trove of published and unpublished sources to tell their story.
