97813999343741

Once a notorious haunt of pirates and smugglers, the small harbour town of Salcombe became famous in the 1800’s for its Clipper Fruit Schooners.
when competition from steamships led to the end of wooden shipbuilding in the 1880’s the town began its transformation into the yachting and tourist centre it is today.

This first full account of the rich and varied history of Salcombe and its surroundings will be welcomed by all who love this beautiful part of South Devon.

Roger Barrett is the curator of Salcombe Maritime Museum and research coordinator and archivist for the Salcombe History Society.
